Octopus Books Presents presented a reading and screening featuring Julie Doxee, Christina Battle, and Khadija Queen. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 7 p.m.
Now that it is going to be July 17th your presence is requested at a reading of poetry & presentation of short film accompanied by a “very” scientific lecture on July 17th. The poetry will be provided by Julie Doxsee, who is in town from Istanbul, which is in Turkey, & Khadijah Queen who lives in Denver, which is in America. The film & “very” scientific lecture will be provided by Christina Battle, who is currently of Denver, which is in America.
Julie Doxsee is the Canadian-American author of three books of poetry: The Next Monsters (Black Ocean 2013), Objects for a Fog Death (Black Ocean 2010), and Undersleep (Octopus Books 2008). She holds a PhD in English and Creative Writing from the University of Denver (2007) and an MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2002). In 2007 she moved to Istanbul, where she teaches academic writing, creative writing, and literature courses at Koç University.
Working with film, video and installation Christina Battle’s work is often inspired by the role of non-official archives, our notions of evidence and explores themes of history and counter-memory, political mythology and environmental catastrophe. Her film screened at Counterpath is above.
Khadijah Queen is the author of Conduit (Black Goat/Akashic 2008) and Black Peculiar, which won the Noemi Press book award in 2010 and was a finalist for the Gatewood Prize at Switchback Books. Her poetry and prose appear widely in journals and anthologies including Aufgabe, jubilat, Best American Nonrequired Reading (Houghton Mifflin 2010), Memoir, Rattle, Cutthroat, Spillway and The Force of What’s Possible (Nightboat 2014). A visual artist and Cave Canem fellow, she is currently working on an illustrated mixed genre project.
